This week’s album of the week is the debut EP from Sales, an Orlando based minimalist Pop duo that I could see again and again and again. I know this is true because I’ve seen them four times and have yet to tire of their fresh, quirky, DIY sound.
Members Jordan Shih and Lauren Morgan don’t have many songs to their name, but over just a few short years, their collaboration has proved fruitful, as a string of simple yet infectious singles made their way online and onto a lot of influential music blogs, bringing them to festivals like Orlando’s Total Bummer Fest and various shows across america. With songs like “Renee”, Chinese New Year”, and “EZ”, this soon became a band to watch out for, and I myself was captivated.
I first caught them at Total Bummer 4EVER in August 2013 and was indeed hooked. Since then I’ve had the pleasure of seeing them in their hometown of Orlando, supporting fellow Orlando prodigy xxyyxx, as well as their first ever shows in Tampa and St. Petersburg just a few months ago. Last September they released their first EP, a self-titled affair that compiled all their singles up to that point, as well as a new song, “Getting It On”, and an xxyyxx remix of their song “Toto.” Lauren’s eccentric yet charming vocals shine over every track, as each song carries an easygoing nature, perfect for relaxing at home or heading out on a Sunday drive.
These two have been nothing but friendly, humble musicians who just love making good tunes and hoping people dig it. Fortunately a lot of people have, and so this year they’ll be embarking on a nationwide headlining tour from mid February to early May, including stops at San Francisco’s Noise Pop festival and Austin, Texas for South By Southwest. While none of those dates include another stop in Florida, it’s safe to say their recent success will send them back here in no time at all.
You can buy their debut EP from their bandcamp here. You can purchase the digital version for $5, or the CD for a very affordable $8.
